I just got done watching the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play the Los Angeles Angels while at work (thank God for MLBTV). The game featured a couple of this years Rookie of the Year candidates; Delmon Young and Reggie Willits. I looked up the rookies that are eligible for the award, and in the American Leagueonly four qualify at the moment.

Delmon Young, doing the damn thing

After looking at the stats, I would have to say that Delmon Young would be my pick for the AL Rookie of the Year at this point in the season. He leads in at-bats, hits, runs (tied for first), homeruns, rbi, and is second in doubles. As far as defense goes, he ranks third in the AL in outfield assists with nine. He only trails Michael Cuddyer and Mark Teahen in that category.

In the NL, I would say that I would have to go with Hunter Pence.  Since Ryan Braun does not qualify yet, I am going with the default choice of Pence.  He leads all offensive categories except stolen bases.  I have not had the opportunity to see him play much, so I can't comment on his defensive abilities just yet.

I'd look for another five or six guys in the American League to qualify for the award by seasons end, with as many as 12 in the National League qualifying, depending on their play, injuries, team needs, etc.
