Well, almost a free agent.  He has to wait until after the World Series, but the Atlanta GM, John Schuerholz, told Jones that they would not be re-signing him.

I think it is pretty smart to let him go.  After a season in which he hit .222 and struck out more times than getting a hit, I think it is safe to say he is not going to be worth the money he is asking.  Apparently he was asking for around 20 Million a year.

So, who is going to pay him all this money?  Here is a list of teams that could use him, but I don't know that they would pay him 20 million a year:

*  Minnesota - Losing Hunter this off season will make him a tempting candidate.  Doubt it would happen though, since the reason Hunter is leaving is because of a lack of pay.  I'd take Hunter over Jones anyway.
*  St. Louis - Will they decide to put money into a young, overpaid player instead of an old, overpaid player?
*  Texas - Maybe, if they decide David Murphy isn't the long term answer.
*  San Fransisco - Bonds is gone, Winn and Roberts aren't the answer in CF.  Maybe Jones, Rajai Davis, and Fred Lewis in the OF?
*  Pittsburgh - I don't see the Pirates forking over the money, but it would be interesting to see.
*  Baltimore - Jones, Patterson, Markakis in the OF?  The Orioles like to spend, so maybe.

I just found this page that someone has gone through a TON of work to put together this listing of the potential free agents of the up-coming off season.

Patterson (Balt) is also a free agent and might take over the spot Jones vacated in Atlanta because he's from the ATL area.

That San Fran thing is intriguing and caught my eye. They have a pretty big ballpark there and need a good CF. You might keep an eye on the El Lefty Malo blog and see if he's throwing any rumors around like that.

Well Jack, apparently someone hates that idea over at El Lefty Malo! I posed this question:

"What about signing Andruw Jones? Think that is a possibility?"

and here is the response I got from "noway"

"he wants a f***in' (I blanked out the letters) raise."
