Last night at THE JUNGLE (IUPUI's gym), the Lady Jags took on Morehead State in a closely contested game.IUPUI trailed 29 - 25 at the half, mainly because of Morehead State's ability to hit the three when they needed it. They finished 5 of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half, while the Jags finished 0 of 5 after the first 20 minutes.
The second half was a bit crazy. IUPUI quickly found themselves down by 12 points and had to dig out of a big hole. The team buckled down and went on the defensive. Down 43 - 31 with just under 14 minutes to play, IUPUI took control of the game. They increased their pressure, they came up with steals, created turnovers, and came up with big stops when they needed them.
With 21 seconds to play, IUPUI was down 54 - 52. Freshman Nicole James stole the inbounds pass and tied the game with 19 seconds to play. Morehead State pushed the ball up the court and were wanting to score quickly, but the defense once again stopped that try. This left the ball in the hands of point guard Anith Smith-Williams, who had only shot 3 - 13 through the game. She tried going to the right, then to the left, then back right. She was stopped on each try. She then tried to go left one more time and she stopped at the free-throw line for a tough, off-balance, pull-up jumper. She got it to go in with just 3.4 seconds left. IUPUI had one chance left and Jernisha Cann's three point try just missed for the win.
Cann led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Brykeesha Tate, Christina Cunningham, and Ashley Conner led the team with 4 assists a piece. Julia Whitted had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks....she's tall!!
IUPUI is now 0 - 2 on the season and travel this weekend to Miami-OH to take on Marshall in the consolation round of the pre-season NIT. They will then play either Radford or Miami-OH depending on who wins those match ups.
