ESPN insider had an interesting "rumor" about Barry Bonds signing with Oakland. Here is a little of what the rumor said:
A major league executive told the San Francisco Chronicle that there is "no doubt" that the A's will sign Barry Bonds.
The A's have reportedly told Bonds he would play left field and split DH duties with Jack Cust.
Now, with all of the rebuilding rumors going around, why would Oakland sign Bonds? If the plan is to get younger and build for the future, then why add a 40 something to split time in left field and DH?
I am all for this signing. It gives Oakland an offensive minded bat in their lineup. Even though he is older, he can still hit the ball and pitchers are still afraid to pitch to him. He incorporates the old school philosophy of the long ball with the new school philosophy of on-base percentage. Here is what the team would look like with Bonds:
C: Kurt Suzuki
1B: Daric Barton / Nick Swisher
2B: Mark Ellis
SS: Bobby Crosby (Donnie Murphy)
3B: Eric Chavez (Jack Hannahan)
LF: Barry Bonds / Jack Cust
CF: Mark Kotsay (Travis Buck)
RF: Nick Swisher / Travis Buck
DH: Bonds / Cust / Swisher / Dan Johnson
