It's been a few days since Dan Haren was traded from Oakland to Arizona. As a fan, I am still very disappointed in this trade. As someone that understands that baseball is business and certain things need to be done in order to continue to produce a successful product, I accept it.
Kevin Goldstein, from Baseball Prospectus, had just done his Top 11 Prospect look at the Oakland organization on December 10th. He went back and fixed the new list yesterday.
While I am excited that Oakland reloaded their organization for a few years to come, I am not excited at the prospect of having to watch below average baseball. I still haven't decided if I will renew my MLB.com subscription for the upcoming season because of this trade.
I am also happy that Haren went to the National League. This means that the only way he can hurt Oakland is if we see him in the playoffs, which won't happen for the next couple years.
I am left wondering now though. Was this trade enough for Billy Beane or does he intend to do more? The possibility of trading guys like Joe Blanton, Huston Street, Rich Harden, Bobby Crosby, Dan Johnson, Nick Swisher, and Mark Kotsay is still out there. Did Beane feel like he got enough to retool for the next few years? By looking at the second prospect list, I'd say that Beane and his scouting crew has to feel good about what they accomplished. Then again, it goes to show how thin the farm system for Oakland was. I wouldn't be surprised if another trade or six happen in the next few weeks.
