On the first day of the NBA season I gave you five players that I thought would be productive this season. I am now going to look back at those players and see how they have done.
1) Ronnie Brewer - I thought he could have a similar season to what Joe Johnson had in his first full year in Phoenix. Johnson averaged 9.8 points and 2.6 assists per game. Brewer is averaging 11 points and 2 assists per. He also is around 2 steals a game, creating a tough match-up on the defensive end. Brewer shoots at a 53% clip from the field, but rarely shoots from outside the three point range. If Brewer wants to step up his game to the next level, he will need to develop that shot to go along with his slashing ability.
2) Rajon Rondo - I said that Rondo needed to improve his three point shooting ability. He has, slightly, going from 21% to 31%. It is an increase, but he still needs to develop that outside touch. His overall shooting has gone up significantly from 42% to 50%. This tells me that he is allowing the stars of the team to be the stars and he is picking his shots more wisely. He will become better and better over the next few years.
3) Martell Webster - Webster won the starting small forward spot during the preseason and looked like he was really going to step into a leadership role with the young Portland roster. He has been good, but not great. Some games he comes out and is on fire, others he disappears for long stretches. He still has to figure out what a good shot is in this league, but you can definitely see the potential that he has when you watch him play.
4) Al Thornton - I said he would be a major contributor for the Clippers this season. Well, I'm half right! He plays 23 minutes a game and averages 11 points. He is the only other rookie (Durant) to average double figures in scoring. Thornton loves to shoot the ball, absolutely loves it. I would like to see Thornton develop a bit more of an aggressive style of play on the defensive end of the court.
5) Rashad McCants - McCants has done very well for himself this season. He is the second leading scorer for the T-Wolves. McCants has also improved his shooting touch overall and from down town. I can see Minnesota building around McCants and Al Jefferson for the future. One thing I would like to see out of him though, is for some more maturity, he seems a bit too immature at times still. Once he harnesses his mental game, he will get to the next level of being a legitimate star in the league.
Overall, I was correct in saying that all of these players would improve this season. However, not all have hit the levels that I thought they would. I'm going to give myself a B- on this one.
