Now that the Shaq for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks trade has been signed and sealed, all involved must get ready to grind out the last part of the season.
Shaq is going to a winning situation and gets to play with one of today's best point guards. Oh, he also gets to play with Amare Stoudamire, who just happens to be one of the best big men in the West.
Shawn Marion in the meantime is going to possibly the worst team in the NBA. However, he will get to showcase his skills for all to see before he hits the open market after next season. It will be interesting to see the lineup that Miami puts on the floor now. I think it will be Jason Williams, Dwayne Wade, Ricky Davis, Marion, and Udonis Haslem. They will probably slide Wade over to the point and have Mark Blount or Earl Barron start when they need to go with a big lineup.
Miami now has three guys that can really fill up the stat sheet. Wade and Davis can get it done with the points, rebounds, and assists, but Marion gives them an explosive defender to pair with Udonis Haslem.
I think the player that most benefits from this trade is Marcus Banks. The 26 year old point guard from UNLV is coming into a situation where the point guard rotation is still not set. Jason Williams is clearly the number one option, but after him is Chris Quinn and Smush Parker (who Pat Riley dislikes). Banks is an explosive player that can really push the ball and score several ways. The Suns signed him for a reason, he has plenty of potential to be a solid player in this league. He just happened to get stuck behind Nash, Raja Bell, and Leandro Barbosa.
Miami got the better end of this deal with the versatile Marion and Marcus Banks. Even if he was just a player that was thrown in to match salaries. Banks has four years remaining on his contract and all the other point guards on the Heat roster have expiring contracts. I'd look for the Heat to go after someone like Jose Calderon in the off season or look to draft a point guard in the upcoming draft for next season.
