Selection Sunday came and went with a few surprises. Oregon a 9 seed? Indiana an 8 seed? Only one team from Conference USA in the Big Dance?
The biggest surprise to me was the omission of IUPUI from all three post season tournaments. I wasn't really expecting them to make it the NCAA tourney, but they were a lock for the NIT! Right? Apparently not. The NIT selection committee decided that Stephen F. Austin, Robert Morris, UNC Asheville, Morgan State, UC Santa Barbara, Rhode Island, and Alabama State were all better than my Jaguars. That's a hard sell to me. IUPUI beat both UMass and Western Michigan. Western Michigan managed to get overlooked from all three committees as well.
OK, OK, they didn't make it into the NCAA or NIT, but they surely would get into the first ever College Basketball Invitational right? Nope, not so much. Let's see, there is Richmond vs Virginia, Houston vs Nevada, Brown vs Ohio. OHIO?? You kidding me? Let me continue. Rider vs Old Dominion (yawn), Cincinnati vs Bradley (why is Cincinnati in?), Valparaiso at Washington...Valpo got in? Miami (OH) also got in? No IUPUI, no Western Michigan? I'd love to see the process in which some of these teams were picked. I really would!
