Over the weekend, Oakland managed to win two-of-three games in Cleveland. This raised their record up to 8-5 on the season, which is important because this is probably the only time this season that I will be able to say OAKLAND LEADS THE AMERICAN LEAGUE IN WINS!
I don't really want to go over the game recaps, so instead I will just post the scores:
Friday: Oakland 9 - Cleveland 7
Saturday: Oakland 7 - Cleveland 3
Sunday: Cleveland 7 - Oakland 1
Alright, now to something else.
It was good to see Oakland actually hit the ball this weekend, up until yesterday when Cliff Lee shut them down for the second time this season. Please, let's not face him anymore, ok? Everyone was hitting the ball on Friday and Saturday. The team collected 22 hits in the first two games of the series. Only 3 yesterday though.
I'm pretty impressed with how well the team has played so far this season. Nobody is really smashing the ball out of the park, but guys are getting on and the other hitters are driving them in. The team only has 6 home runs combined, but they have 25 doubles and 5 triples. Travis Buck only has 8 hits so far this season, but has 6 doubles and 1 triple. So, he isn't getting on much, but when he does, it is usually in scoring position. Mark Ellis leads the team with 2 homers, but also has 2 triples, and 3 doubles. This team isn't built for power, but there are a lot of players that are line-drive hitters and they know how to find the gaps. Mike Sweeney has been a solid pick up for the A's this season.
One thing that bothers me about the offense, is the fact that guys are striking out way too much. Oakland has struck out 95 times in 443 at-bats. That is horrible. Jack Cust has k'd 16 of his 35 at-bats and Daric Barton has gone down swinging 16 of 49 at-bats. Preaching plate patience is one thing, but when you are striking out because you are passing up on quality pitches early in the at-bat, then you should change up your approach a little.
