So who would you say the ace of the Oakland A's staff is this season? Joe Blanton? Not with his 3-10 record. Rich Harden? He's good, but with his health, you don't know if he will be around. So, who is the staff ace so far? How about "The Duke", Justin Duchscherer.
This season, Duchscherer has gone from the role of setup man to starter. He has thrived in the change and has opened eyes around the league with his performance.
Duke has been in the Oakland organization since 2003 and has been a bullpen mainstay since the 2004 season. He has always been a guy that could come in and pitch an inning or two for the team when needed. He would also make the occasional long inning relief appearance.
Duchscherer is currently 8-4 on the season with an ERA of 1.99 and a spectacular WHIP of .97. In 77 innings pitched, he has given up only 57 hits and 18 walks. Opponents are only batting .208 against him and slugging .296 on the season. All of these numbers have kept Oakland in the running for the AL West lead and have put Duchscherer on the All Star radar.
