With the draft about three weeks away, some players are gaining ground in the draft and some are losing ground.

One player that is starting to gain ground is George Hill, IUPUI's do-all shooting guard.

Hill declared for the draft, but did not sign with an agent, leaving the option open to come back to school.  He received an invite to Orlando's pre-draft camp and made a nice showing for himself.  Here is what ESPN's Chad Ford had to say about Hill's showing in Orlando:

"The other sleeper in the draft is IUPUI's George Hill. Hill is trying to show NBA teams that he has what it takes to play the point. His combination of athleticism, shooting ability and poise has stood out. He had 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting in his first game. While teams still aren't sure about his point guard abilities, he clearly can play with the top players here."
The Measurements - From ESPN Insider
  • PG - 6'2 - 180lbs
  • Vertical Jump with no step - 34in
  • Vertical Jump max - 37.5in
  • Bench Press (185lbs) - 9 reps
  • Lane Agility Test - 12.2 seconds
  • Sprint (3/4 court) - 3.07 seconds
The Numbers - From iupuijags.com
  • 36.8 minutes per game
  • 21.5 points per game
  • 6.8 rebounds per game
  • 4.3 assists per game
  • 1.8 steals per game
  • 54.5% field goal shooting
  • 45% three point shooting
  • 81.2% free throw shooting
The numbers are impressive for his team, but he also led the Summit League in double doubles (9), games with 30 points or more (7), and double digit rebound games (9).  That is pretty impressive for a guy that is 6'2.  He has proven that he can play amongst the big boys in Orlando and he has the stats and workout numbers to prove he is deserving of being picked.

If Hill decides to come back to school, he will most likely set the IUPUI all-time scoring record (he's 4th right now) and he could then sneak into the first round with next year's point guard crop thinner than this year's group.

Someone should draft him this year though.  I am a little partial because I attended IUPUI and have seen him play several times, but I know that he can be a player that stays in the NBA for a nice, long career.  Who knows, maybe when the "experts" look at this draft a few years from now, they might say he was the steal of the draft!

I've had Insider since ESPN the Magazine came out and I got Insider with it because I did not want the crappy sweatshirt they were sending out. So I think I pay like 2.95 a month for it now. With no magazine!
