According to the Indianapolis Star, the Toronto Star, and ESPN.com, the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors are talking about a trade that would send Jermaine O'Neal to the Raptors for T.J. Ford (nice), Rasho Nesterovic (serviceable), and the Raptors first round pick (YES!!).

This would be huge for Indiana.  They get rid of Jermaine's HUGE contract, they gain a center than can contribute, a starting point guard, and another first round pick.

The negatives to this would be that Ford's contract is longer and he is also a health risk.  However, I think this trade is worth it just for the 17th pick in the first round.  This would give Indiana the 11th and 17th picks, which could be used to grab the best available player with both picks.  Since a point guard wouldn't really be needed at 11, a player like Brandon Rush could be had.  Then at 17, a player like Robin Lopez or Marreese Speights could be grabbed up.

Then again, Indiana could package both of those picks to move up in the draft and pick a player that can give them more of an impact.  Maybe Indiana could swap both of those picks for the number 3 and then take who is left out of Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, or OJ Mayo.  Of course, that is just a fantasy scenario, but still, if this trade goes through, the impact could be enormous for Indiana.

I like the deal for the Raptors for sure.

Not sure why taking on more years of salary for a poor, injury prone PG is a good thing.

You would be paying 15.5 million per year for your PG by committee...

I think a massive salary dump to Cleveland makes sense... for expiring contracts.

Getting rid of an injury prone center worth 21 to 22 mil a year is quite good.

What is your definition of poor? Ford averaged 12 points and 6 assists in 50+ games this season. He shot over 46% from the field as well. Jermaine averaged 13 points and 6 boards in 40+ games and shot less than 44% from the field.

His game is poor because he can't defend right off the bat. He is too small to defend bigger PGs. His FG% this year is likely more of an aberration than anything else. He has extremely limited range. No hope to go out to the 3 point line. He has a grown a bit of a reputation as being selfish, since some Raptors faithful refer to him as "Me-J."

I think the idea should be to get rid of Dunleavy/Murphy/Tinsley somehow since they are signed for an additional year. Getting Ford just seems to pile onto their already terrible payroll.

He never got to the line a ton, and his spinal issue isn't going to help that at all...

I would think a Dunleavy/JO trade to Cleveland for expiring contracts is the way to go.

That is a fair assessment Joe. But, with some players, I feel like all they need is a change of scenery. With Ford, he is stuck behind Calderon no matter what. So, he then plays selfishly to make up for his lack of PT. Is this the right way to go about it? No, of course not. I think if he was the main PG in Indiana, he would turn that around and lead the type of offense that Jim O'Brien wants.

Also, Indiana's front office (Larry Bird mostly) says that Dunleavy and Granger are the only untouchables this summer.

I wish we could find a taker for Tinsley.
