In the last entry I talked a little about the work that was accomplished while I was in Gallup, New Mexico.  Now I want to talk about what I experienced outside of the work.

Gallup, New Mexico has a population of about 21,000 (90,000 if you include the reservations) and there really isn't much to the place.  It is located on Route 66, so the town/city has plenty of tourist traffic.  If you want to find some homemade jewelry then this is the place to come.  If you are looking for nightlife, then you should probably stay in Albuquerque or head into Arizona.

Alcoholism is rampant in this area and people don't really have much of a work ethic.  This isn't a slam on the locals as they will most likely tell you the exact same thing.

On our last day of work, we were able to go and visit with a couple of the famous "code talkers."  They gave us a two hour presentation about their lives growing up and then gave us a glimpse into their lives as Marines and as code talkers.  Both of the men were in their 80's, but their memories were vivid and I sat there thinking about the change in times.  It was pretty amazing to me what they had to go through in their lives.

Prairie Dogs were a common sight while out and about.  They are not the smartest animals alive, but they provide for some funny moments.  If one runs into the road, you can be sure that two or three more will follow.  If you are outside walking, they might run along side of you, which is sort of weird, but amusing to watch as they pop out of one hole and come out of another about 10 feet later.

We spent our last day and night in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  We stayed about two blocks from the campus of the University of New Mexico.  It is actually pretty neat how they have their sports complex set up.  Three of the four corners of the intersection contain the football field, The PIT, and the Albuquerque Isotopes AAA baseball stadium.  Also in town are the Thunderbirds, an NBDL team.  So, if you are a sports fan and you don't want to spend a lot of money on going to a game, then this is the place for you.  A couple people from our group actually got a tour of The PIT by a few of the basketball players.  I am promised pictures, so I hope I get to see them.

All in all, I could actually see myself living in Albuquerque.  The pace of life is much like back home and the weather is great.  80s and 90s, no humidity, not much rain, very little snow.  I could handle all of that.

Well, that is all I have for now, I am about to hop on my flight to Dallas, and then head back into Indianapolis.
