Word came across the local news headlines tonight that Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning had knee surgery that could keep him out for up to 6 weeks. Manning had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee with only 10 days remaining before the start of training camp. The bursa sac is a "pouch", so-to-speak, that contains a joint's synovial fluid. Synovial fluid being that which lubricates the joint for smooth motion. Apparently Manning had been receiving treatment for four months without success, so the doctors decided surgery was the last resort. The Colts open the regular season on September 7th against the Chicago Bears. Manning's status for that game is up in the air at the moment, but given his history of not missing starts I would expect him to be back in time to prevent Jim Sorgi from making a monumental season opening start. Let's hope this is the only bad news we hear on the injury front from Colts camp throughout July and August.
