"Colt Brennan drops back and looks down field. He can't find anyone open. He's scrambling to his right, here comes Marcus Howard. Howard wraps Brennan up and takes him down again. This guy is everywhere tonight."
That pretty much sums up last year's Sugar Bowl when Georgia demolished Hawaii. Most of the beating on defense was given by Colt's rookie, Marcus Howard.
The DE/OLB from UGA was selected in the 5th round of the draft this past April. His blend of speed and power was very intriguing for the Colts and they felt they could use him in their Cover 2 defense, where speed is king.
Howard really hadn't popped onto the national radar until that Sugar Bowl game where he spent more time in the Hawaii backfield than one of the Warriors' running backs. With constant pressure on the quarterback, he made the secondary's job 100 times easier. Howard ended his collegiate career with 52 QB pressures and 12 sacks. Again, most of those are from his senior season when he had 42 QB pressures and 10.5 sacks.
In the first preseason game against the Washington Redskins Howard recorded 3 tackles and 1.5 sacks. I was pretty pleased with his performance and it looked like he was picking up the defense pretty well. I didn't see him on the field against Carolina, so I am assuming that he had some injury that I hadn't heard about, which is usually the case in preseason.
Overall, I think Howard will become a great fit in the defensive scheme and should definitely cause some trouble in the opposing team's backfields.
