lynchbron.jpgWith the news of Bob Sanders missing the next 4 to 6 weeks with a high ankle sprain coming out today, the Colts are certainly put into a tough situation.  Sanders was the Defensive Player of the Year last season and is definitely a huge piece to the Colts defensive success.  The Colts have a few options to mull over while Sanders is gone.

A)  They can let guys like Matt Giordano and Melvin Bullitt fill in and let them get a bit more experience for later in the season.  Both Giordano and Bullitt are hard hitters and hustle every play, but they aren't at the same level of talent or experience as Sanders.

B)  They can have Marlin Jackson fill in for Sanders and then let Tim Jennings and Dante Hughes get some extra playing time and experience.  Jennings is a decent cover corner and Jackson's cover skills could be a good thing for the Strong Safety position.  This move leaves Giordano and Bullitt as backups, a position that might be more comfortable for them.

C)  The Chief suggested this one to me.  They can go out and make an impact by signing retired ex-Bronco, John Lynch.  I spoke about Sanders' level of talent and Lynch certainly can match that.  Lynch is a future Hall of Famer and his experience on the field and in the Cover-2 defense is beyond what any other Colts player can bring to the table.  Plus, how cool would it be to see John Lynch reunited with Tony Dungy in possibly his last season of coaching?

I am hoping the Colts take option C and sign one of the greatest safeties the NFL has ever seen.  With the prospect of a Super Bowl Championship and playing for a great organization, I would think that Lynch would come back for the veteran's minimum.  Although, he did sign with the Patriots before the season started and then retired after the preseason, maybe he would change his mind and give it another run for the rest of the season.

Jimmeny Christmas, don't panic. There are plenty of Bullits int he gun. Safety may be our deepest position. Giordano could start on another team if he is healthy and Bullitt played exceptionally well in the preseason. We can survive this. For Heaven's sake, if we are going to sign somebody lets sign Warren Sapp and get a freaking defensive tackle.

Oh, and the answer to your earlier question to me was Kyle Inghram.
