With the Matt Holliday deal in the bag, Oakland now has to decide if they are going to be buyers this winter, or if they are just going to sit tight and let this team decide their future.
If Oakland is going to be active on the market, here are some players that I think would work well on this team:
First Base
* Sean Casey - Casey has always had a good batting eye and gets on base quite a bit. He hit .322 in 200 at-bats last season and his OBP of .381 are things Oakland covets.
** Wishful Thinking: Mark Texeira - Too much money for the A's, but it would be sweet to see him Green and Gold next season.
Second Base
* Felipe Lopez - I'm not sure what kind of contract he is going to be looking for, but he could be a solid utility player for this team and could spell Mark Ellis from time to time.
Short Stop
* Rafael Furcal - He shouldn't get anywhere near the 15mil that he got last season, which could land him in Oakland's price range. He would be an offensive upgrade over Bobby Crosby and would provide the same level of defense.
* Nomar Garciaparra - I know he hasn't played short much in the last few seasons, but he could fill in there or at first or even third if needed.
Third Base
* Casey Blake - He is a Type B free agent, so I'm not sure if Billy Beane would go for him, but he could provide some leadership and play third, first, outfield, and DH too.
Outfield
* Brad Wilkerson - Not real flashy, but with a one year deal, he could provide some flashes.
* Ken Griffey Jr. - He could be signed for a deal similar to the one that Frank Thomas signed a few seasons ago for the A's.
* Rocco Baldelli - I know his health isn't great, but worth the risk of a one year deal.
** Wishful Thinking: Adam Dunn - His strikeout numbers are par for the course with this team, but his power could be useful. Probably too much cheese for Oakland.
Pitchers
* Brad Penny - Another one year deal worth the risk. Could land for longer on another team though.
* Jon Garland - Type B free agent, but worth it in my opinion. He is an innings eater too. Might be out of Oakland's price range though.
* Brandon Lyon - Good bullpen presence that could fit right in with this team.
** Injury Bargains - Mark Prior and Mark Mulder - Two pitchers that, when healthy, are very effective. Could garner incentive laden deals this season.
*** Wishful Thinking: AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets - Three starters that are going draw big money this winter. Not even on Oakland's list.
