For a franchise that had a ton of success in the 90s, they didn't draft very well for the future. I am looking at their draft history from 1990s and that decade was pretty bad for the Bulls. Guys like Mark Randall, Byron Houston, Corey Benjamin, and Keith Booth all haunt the Bulls on draft night. However, it was the turn of the century draft night that has peeked my interest.
The year 2000 was the start of a new decade and was supposed to help usher in a new Bulls' era. With three first round picks, the fans of Chicago had to be excited about what was in store. Let's take a gander.
With the 4th pick in the 2000 NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls select Marcus Fizer out of Iowa State. Now, Fizer was a beast at ISU and I can see why the Bulls drafted him. He was a big body that had decent range and could score on the blocks. He just never panned out.
With the 6th pick in the 2000 NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls select Chris Mihm from the University of Texas....and there is a trade to announce. The Chicago Bulls trade the draft rights to Chris Mihm to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the draft rights to Jamal Crawford, the 7th pick in the draft. Mihm was another big body that was very active and I thought that Chicago was going to build from the inside and work to the perimeter in the rest of the draft. By obtaining Crawford, the Bulls felt like they had a great inside-outside combo for years to come. Not so much. Crawford blossomed his fourth season with the Bulls, but was then shipped off to the bright lights of New York city. He now is with the Golden State Warriors in a run-n-gun type offense that his hair-trigger release loves.
With the 24th pick in the 2000 NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls select Dalibor Bagaric out of...Croatia! Bagaric never really did much in the NBA except earn his pension for playing in 95 games.
I know that I said I would only look at the first round picks, but Chicago didn't stop with their insanity on that night. They also had the 32nd, 33rd, and 34th picks in the draft. Who did they grab? AJ Guyton (Indiana), Jake Voskuhl (UConn), and Khalid El-Amin (UConn). All three were talented college players, but again, they never amounted to anything in the NBA. El-Amin ate his way out of the league and Guyton was a tweener that never could stick. Voskuhl actually is the second highest tenured NBA player from this draft class. He played in over 400 games, while Jamal Crawford has played in over 550 and counting.
The rest of the 2000 decade has been decent for the Bulls, but they haven't made it back to the glory days of past. Who knows, now that Derrick Rose is in red and black, they might have a chance.
