After Billy Beane did an about-face and traded FOR a star player, he thought he would try and build this team into a contender through free agency. However, the players that the A's are targeting (rumored), leaves me scratching my head.
First on the list is Jason Giambi. The A's need another left-handed hitter that is either feast or famine? We already had/have that with Dan Johnson, Nick Swisher, and Jack Cust. If this was back when Giambi was trying to decide on staying in Oakland or taking the money from New York, I would have begged and pleaded for him to stay, but not now.
Next on the list is Nick Johnson. If read that the A's are choosing between Johnson and Giambi and if they don't sign one, then they hope they sign the other. WHY? Johnson can't even stay healthy enough to play. Oh wait, he'd be a perfect fit in Oakland then.
The one that is really confusing the crap out of me is the rumors surrounding Randy Johnson. Um...what? Why on earth would Beane sign Randy Johnson? He is 45 years old!! He did have a decent season last year, but nothing that would make me want to put him on the top of my spending list. Why not go after someone like Jon Garland instead? Not that he is that great, but he is younger and is an innings eater.
On top of these rumors, Rafael Furcal declined Oakland's offer and is wanting a bigger deal. I know that he would be a nice addition to the top of the lineup, but he isn't the savior for this offense or this franchise.
Also, Alan Embree signed with the Rockies apparently, but the A's don't get any draft picks, because they didn't offer him arbitration. That sucks!!
I really don't get what the A's are doing as an organization right now. They have all of this "money" to spend, but they are wasting it on the wrong players if these rumors turn out to be true.
