Just over one full year (and five days) ago, Buck Rampage broke a story about possible drug usage within the Indiana University men's basketball team. And, as expected, it brought down quite a bit of criticism, hate, anger, and any other words that go along with that general theme. However, the crew at Cobra Brigade stuck to their guns and their story and never gave up their "source(s)", who is/are now looking about as credible as you can be in today's society.
Eric Gordon confirmed the original thoughts in an article found in the Indianapolis Star today. I think these quotes from EJ pretty much sum it up:
"Sometimes it felt like it wasn't even a real basketball team because of all the turmoil that went on.....I was just thinking about that the other day. It was so crazy that all that stuff threw off a good season and made it a waste, basically."
"It was really tough for us to be around each other all the time off the court because we were so separate."
When you stop and think about it, the allegations sound silly. A whole team using drugs? This isn't the 60s or 70s, we are in the 21st century and worried about drugs breaking up a team? But, it was confirmed back in December of 2007 when Buck Rampage posted the piece and it was confirmed again when this story hit the Indianapolis Star.
I'm glad to see that Eric and DJ White were not involved in this whole deal, but it makes me wish that these two young men had the courage to stand up and blow the whistle back then. It is funny that the two best players, who both ended up in the NBA, were not involved in all of this mess. Maybe that is a message that should be driven home to anyone that has aspirations of playing professional sports...
