Well, the Colts didn't end up using the franchise tag on Kelvin Hayden, so that is a plus. But, I don't think that Hayden is worth $43mil over 5 years, with $22mil of that being in guaranteed money.
The Colts' front office is excited because now they can afford to go and sign their other free agents, mainly Dominic Rhodes and Jeff Saturday. They can now use the franchise tag on Jeff Saturday for this season, which would prevent them from having to negotiate a long-term deal with him until after the season.
This may be all well and good and the Colts might be experiencing those warm fuzzies, but I don't know that signing Hayden was all that needed. With all of the talent at CB in the draft and hitting free agency, Indianapolis could have acquired someone else for a LOT less money.
Bill Polian is talking about how this is the worst the cap has been since he's been with the team. Well, there is a simple reason for that. YOU'RE GIVING PLAYERS TOO MUCH MONEY TO STAY IN INDY!!!
With all of the talk from Peyton about wanting to attract free agents, it sure would be nice to see him step up to the plate and maybe restructure his deal or even take a pay cut. Heck, with all of his endorsements, he could play for the veterans minimum and still be the highest paid player in the game after all is said and done.
The more I think about it, the more I hate this signing. Kelvin, you better be worth it in the end!!!
