I went into the draft fully expecting the Colts to fill their DT and WR needs in the first two rounds of the draft.  So, as I sat there, watching the first round unfold and guys like Rey Maualuga, Clay Matthews, and Hakeem Nicks looked like they might be available to the Colts when they selected, I started to get excited.  Then, Green Bay traded up to 26 and took Matthews.  I was still excited, even though Peria Jerry went off the board at 24 to Atlanta.  I figured if we didn't take Nicks, we would at least take Maualuga since he could help us out at LB, another need that we have.  Instead, I hear Donald Brown's name called for the Colts.  That sent me into an instant outrage and a hate fueled texting session with four individuals.  MiamiRec82 said, "We are thinking about going to the Colts' complex to beat up Polian."  I volunteered to drive them there.  The Chief thought maybe we would trade Joseph Addai now, but I started to wonder what we could really get out of him at this point.  Plus, he is cheap (still on rookie contract), so I don't know if that would be beneficial to us.  Kelper summed it all up with, "The Giants are going to take Hakeem Nicks and Eli is going to be laughing his way to the Super Bowl."  Agreed.

After that crap fest of a pick, I then had to sit through multiple picks that ended with me shouting out four letter words.  MILK, LOVE, WORK, UTAH, and KITE were not among those words that I spoke.  I had to wait until pick 61 for the Colts next and last pick of day one.  Oh, wait, there is a trade!  The Colts trade up 5 spots to pick.....Fili Moala, DT, USC!!  I don't know that it was necessary to trade up for him, but at least they took a player that fills a MAJOR NEED.  Plus, his last name rhymes with Koala, which is one of the most dangerous animals in the world...I think (OK, it's not, but work with it).  In order to trade up, we got rid of one of our 5th round picks, which doesn't really hurt us, because we have two 4th rounders, so we still end up with 7 total picks.

I am still trying to process the Brown pick and I still don't like it.  I down right hate it right now.  Maybe he will become the next Eric Dickerson and not the next Joseph Addai.  Hell, I'll accept it if he becomes the next Dominic Rhodes and just runs with the ball instead of dancing himself into a tackle (I'm talking to you Addai).

*  I have been told by a pretty RELIABLE source that Peyton wanted Nicks and was pretty upset at not getting him in the first round.  I was then told that the Colts are looking at WR, Austin Collie out of BYU.  Why?  I don't know.  He isn't any better than Pierre Garcon, in my opinion.  Don't get me wrong, I really like Garcon, but I don't see the need to grab a WR that isn't going to come in and play right away.  They missed out in the first round, so I think the Colts should just concentrate on defense the rest of the draft.  Unless of course, they take Ramses Barden!

Lawrence Sidbury, Scott McKillop, Marcus Freeman, Dorrell Scott, DJ Moore, Asher Allen, Victor Harris, and Dominique Johnson are still available.  I'd love to see the Colts load up on a couple of these guys.  Freeman, Scott, and Moore on day two would thrill me to death!

Look, i know you are shitting spiders about this pick, and i understand a little bit. You know how much i wanted Nicks, I mean, look at him break all those tackles. Still, I think this pick of Brown is a pick we can really make hay with. If he pushes Addai and Addai responds, it would be a huge win for the Colts. If he pushes Addai and Addai does not respond, it will be a complete, total, and unambiguous confirmation that Polian made the right choice, that Addai lost his edge after that first season, and that we got out of the Addai business at the right time. If he runs effectively, and if theline has improved at all, the pass game will still be effective because of Peyton's playaction ability. You know how Polian likes to draft the guy he wants the year BEFORE he uses him? I think we may have seen it last year with Garcon and this year with Brown. Addai gets this year to audition himself for the long run and if he sucks, next year is forfeit. I am totally thrilled with the DT picks, I think that is an instant upgrade and that both players may be starting by week 6. I also think that picking up Painter is a huge upgrade at backup QB. Painter came from a pass happy offense and was good until his last (injury riddled) season. Don't forget he was a Heisman candidate at the beginning of the year and was much higher on the QB draft board before his shoulder went out. This is a really great blog post that critically analyzes why Purdue went from being so effective with the spread under Orton and Brees and started to deteriorate over the last 3 - 4 years.

This is really good stuff that you need to be mroe than a novice fan to understand. You and HT might like it.

I like the DTs and Jerraud Powers. I even like the Jaimie Thomas pick, but I can NOT and will not be happy about this Donald Brown pick. I don't care if he turns into the next LT, I really don't. I'm tired of Bill Polian NOT picking the people this team NEEDS. Year in, year out, the same stupid crap in the draft. It takes an offense AND a defense to win in the Playoffs.
