I am patiently waiting for the NBA Lottery selection to happen this evening. Even with a weaker draft class, I am still excited to see where the Pacers will end up in the order. It looks like they will be picking at 13, so anything before that would be great.
I was checking ESPN's Mock Lottery Machine thing and they currently have Indiana taking Eric Maynor, PG out of Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) with the 13th pick. I sat and thought about this pick for a few minutes and I've decided that I wouldn't be upset with this pick at all. He is a three year starter for the Rams and has averaged five or more assists in those three seasons. His assist-to-turnover ratio isn't great, but not too many college point guards have one that is just off the charts amazing.
I checked out ESPN's scouting report for Maynor since it was on their Mock and here is what they have to say:
Positives:
Negatives:
Now, as I look at the positives and negatives on Maynor, I notice that he is "An emerging shooter with 3-point range" and that he "Needs more consistency from 3-point territory." I read that first one as he is improving his shot, so why the need to list it as a negative?
Also, the negative against him not playing against top tier talent. Not every player in the NBA comes from a power conference. Also, nobody in the college ranks plays against NBA quality talent on a regular basis, so that point is moot. He will learn the NBA ropes just like every other rookie. He will struggle on some night and look brilliant on others. That is part of learning the game.
The other two negatives are the points about him needing to add strength and trying to do too much. Again, in the NBA, he will learn to run the team the way the coaching staff wants him to and he will learn the rights and wrongs. The strength really isn't an issue to me, because look at guys like TJ Ford and Travis Diener. He will add strength, but let's not get confused, he isn't posting up on anybody, especially in the Pacers' offense.
When the order is set, I will try and brainstorm my own Mock and throw that up for you.
