Finally have some time to take a look at the Point Guard breakdown for the Pacers!

Free Agents at Position:

  • Jarrett Jack (restricted) - I'm not really sure what the Pacers will do here with Jack.  I think he will draw some interest from other teams, but for how much and how long are yet to be determined.  Is he a true starter in the NBA?  I would say no, but he is a very good backup, that he has shown.  Though, he did start toward the end of the season, while TJ Ford came off the bench.
  • Travis Diener (player option) - I would assume that Diener will exercise his player option for this season.  He had some injury issues this past season, so he didn't get to perform like he wanted.  If Jack isn't back, then Diener would be the primary backup to TJ Ford, unless the Pacers draft a top PG this year.

Under Contract at Position:

  • TJ Ford - Started at the beginning of the season, but came off the bench toward the end of the year while battling back from injuries.  What is his role this next season?  That is going to be the big question.  Do the Pacers try to trade him and then sign Jack and draft a PG or do they keep Ford as the starter?  We will see.
  • Jamal Tinsley - Still sitting at home in Atlanta, still making money from the Pacers.  Here is a novel idea...LET'S USE TINSLEY!  He is a solid point guard.  I honestly have not had a problem with Tinsley's off the court stuff.  Marquis Daniels is still on the team and he was in about as much trouble as Tinsley, so I don't see why the need for the double standard.

Possible Draft Picks at Position:

I'm going to take a pass on Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, and Jrue Holiday.  The Pacers need a PG with some experience running a team, not 19 year old kid with just a season of experience.

Some of the Point Guards I like are:

  • Eric Maynor
  • Ty Lawson
  • Nick Calathes
  • Jonny Flynn
  • Darren Collison

There isn't a ton of quality depth at this position, just like the entire draft class, but who knows, maybe there are a couple diamonds in the rough out there.

Possible Free Agents at Position:

There aren't really many options for the Pacers at this position due to the fact that most of the guys that are free agents are going to cost too much money.  Mike Bibby, Jason Kidd, Ray Felton, Ramon Sessions, etc. are all going to be earning a lot of interest on the open market.  Now, would I be thrilled if we obtained one of these guys?  Yes, I would be very happy to see a Bibby or Sessions in a Pacers Uniform.  But, I don't see it happening.

Possible Trade Options at Position:

I doubt we will see a trade for a PG this summer.  Honestly, unless a trade brings us a big man, I don't see a trade at all this summer, unless it is a salary trimming trade, which probably won't happen either.
