After taking a look at the Center situation for the Pacers, I now want to take a look at the Power Forward situation and what it could look like going into the summer.
Free Agents at Position:
- Josh McRoberts (restricted) - He will probably be brought back on the cheap, because he is a big body that provides depth.
- Maceo Baston (unrestricted) - I don't see him coming back next season.
Under Contract at Position:
- Troy Murphy - Murphy had one of his best seasons as a pro this past season, but he isn't a true post player. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that he can stretch the defense and hit the three, but he rarely tries to score off the block. Part of that is the Jim O'Brien offense and part of that is Murphy's comfort level. With averages of 14 points and 11.8 rebounds a game, I'll take it.
Possible Draft Picks at Position:
Well, I know that we aren't getting Blake Griffin and that is OK with me, because I'm not really convinced that he is going to be as awesome as everyone else thinks. Jordan Hill will probably be off the board, but he is a project because he is still maturing into the game of basketball. James Johnson is similar to Hill, but is very long and athletic.
A few favorites at this position for me are:
- Jarvis Varnado - a mean shot blocker, but could probably use another year in school to get some more strength.
- Jon Brockman - averaged a double double this past season and really works hard down low.
- Jeff Pendergraph - a lot of people forgot about him this season, but he did most of the dirty work when James Harden was off.
- Leo Lyons - reminds me of Tayshaun Prince with his frame, but is listed at 6'9, 240. Doesn't like the post very much, which would be a fit in the JOB offensive scheme.
Possible Free Agents at Position:
- Drew Gooden - probably out of Indiana's price range.
- Chris Anderson - the Birdman could bring his energy to the Pacers.
- Brandon Bass - young, cheap, does all the banging you would want him to do.
- Hakim Warrick - long, athletic and can score down low.
- Stromile Swift - Hakim Warrick, SR. Would be a solid fit for this team.
Possible Trade Targets:
- David West
- Udonis Haslem
With the Hornets looking to cut salary, I could see them moving West for a nice package. Do the Pacers have that? If they throw in their first round pick they do, which I'm all for that this season.
Haslem is interesting, because he has an expiring contract this next season and would be of good value to the Pacers. Not only does he score on the block, but he rebounds and defends well too. His expiring contract would also be an asset in future trade discussions this coming season.
