The Pistons have some salary cap room this summer due to Allen Iverson coming off the books.  Are they going to create more room for 2010 by trading other players or are they going to build through the draft and smart free agent moves.

Let's take a look at what the Pistons might do...

2009 Free Agents
  • Walter Herrmann (Restricted)
  • Kwame Brown (Player Option - Unrestricted)
  • Allen Iverson (Unrestricted)
  • Antonio McDyess (Unrestricted)
  • Rasheed Wallace (Unrestricted)

If Joe Dumars really wants to save some cash for next summer, then he will let all of these guys walk.

Depth Chart (Pre-Draft)

PG:  Rodney Stuckey - Will Bynum
SG:  Richard Hamilton - Aaron Afflalo
SF:  Tayshaun Prince
PF:  Amir Johnson - Walter Sharpe
C:  Jason Maxiell

Draft Picks (Mock Picks)

  • 15th overall - Earl Clark, SF/PF, Louisville - Clark is a versatile player that can fill in at the three or four for this team.  He fits the mold that Joe Dumars likes as far as guys that can multi-task.  Needs to improve his jumper.
  • 36th overall - Derrick Brown, PF, Xavier - I've heard a lot of comparisons to Lamar Odom with his ability to shoot, but he doesn't have the same abilities as Odom at handling the rock.  Think more Troy Murphy than Lamar Odom and you still have a solid player in the second round.
  • 39th overall - Toney Douglas, PG/SG, Florida State - Douglas is a proven scorer, which is something the Pistons could use off of their bench.  Would have to have an amazing summer and training camp to push Will Bynum and Aaron Afflalo for playing time in the second unit.
  • 44th overall - Jonas Jerebok, SF/PF, Sweden - Another multi-talented guy for this squad.  Perfect replacement for Walter Herrmann.  Might spend another season or two overseas, but I honestly think his game translates very well to the NBA right now.

Depth Chart (Post-Draft)

PG:  Rodney Stuckey - Will Bynum - Toney Douglas
SG:  Richard Hamilton - Aaron Afflalo - Toney Douglas
SF:  Tayshaun Prince - Earl Clark - Jonas Jerebko
PF:  Amir Johnson - Jonas Jerebko - Earl Clark
C:  Jason Maxiell - Walter Sharpe - Amir Johnson

Players on Trade Block

  • Richard Hamilton

I only see Hamilton on the move this summer if the Pistons decide to just rebuild for the 2010 summer/season.  Other than that, I really don't see the point in moving any of the players on this team.

Final Analysis

This team really struggled after trading away their leader, Chauncey Billups.  I know it was a money move for the future, but it goes to show just how much this team relied on Billups and just how good of a player he really is.  They have enough talent to make the playoffs, it is just a matter of if they will or not.
