I don't normally talk about politics...or religion for that matter. They are areas with too much gray and too many questions to even begin a conversation, especially when the other person isn't open minded enough to not try a shouting match when you say something they don't like.
Having said this, I want to get something off of my chest. I DON'T WANT A CELEBRITY FOR A PRESIDENT. I get the fact that ESPN is part of the Disney/ABC family. I get the fact that Obama is the first (1/2) black president ever. I really do get all the excitement. BUT, enough is enough for crying out loud.
I don't care that he does his bracket for March Madness. I already assumed he did, because everyone else in America does, even my Grandma who picks IU to go to the Final Four even when they aren't in the tournament. I didn't need to see a five minute piece on his selections on EVERY run of Sportscenter, but I sat there and took it, because I find the other options available (I'm talking to you Fox Sports Net) lack a certain something that will keep my attention.
When I logged on to The World Wide Sports Leaders' website today, because I wanted to see the score of the Cubs/White Sox game, I about threw up all over BOTH of my computer screens. I don't care that Obama plays basketball. I really don't. And, I know that I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I can't imagine that anyone does care that he plays basketball. What I do care about is my President being the damn President and tackling issues like, oh I don't know, taxes or healthcare, or hey, how about these gas prices that seem to continue to rise in these "dire economic times."
I could care less that a President played baseball at Yale, or acted in movies, or loves Arkansas football, or owned part of the Texas Rangers, so WHY in the world would I care about a President that dribbles with his left hand?? And why is it such a big deal? Because he is young enough and his knees aren't shot? Because he picked North Carolina to win it all? Is he going to start a WHBL (White House Basketball League) with all the same trimmings of my local rec leagues? Everyone must have the same color jersey to compete!
Maybe I'll have an article written about me the next time I decide to pay my taxes?!

I agree that he is a popular person. As he should be...he is the president.
I just get tired of the non-stop (exaggeration) coverage on ESPN.
Everyone is trying to find a way onto the Obama publicity train whether it's ESPN, NBC, CBS, Fox, etc. It's not Obama that finds his life newsworthy, it's the people who write about him.
I think it's just a sign of the times with journalism. Kind of like what Paine wrote about the McFadden interview. No one really seems to get out there and give us something interesting to read.

Actually, I prefer Presidents with a background that has athletics in it. People who haven't played sports scare me. I liked that McCain is into boxing and the Bush family is into baseball. Evan Bayh scares me because I don't know what sports he follows and Palin.....I don't consider shooting animals a sport.
Obama kind of gets the Erin Andrews treatment though....you know you are going to get page hits when you write something about him.
