As free agency has heated up, teams are contacting agents left and right.  Everyone is putting out feelers and kicking tires right now.  General Managers are trying to decide who fits their team the best and who will sign with them without breaking the bank.

The Pacers are doing all of these things as well, but at their own pace.  David Morway and Larry Bird have expressed to the fans that they will make moves this Summer, but a slower pace than most teams.  Part of me wants to see them hurry and strike early, but the other part of me knows that this free agent market will soon turn in favor of teams who are looking to buy.

With so many free agents and not a ton of money (relatively speaking), a lot of players are going to be signing for a lot less than they normally would.  This works in favor of the teams who are trying to improve, but not go broke doing so.

The first players I saw the Pacers were looking at were Marcin Gortat, Dahntay Jones, and Rodney Carney.  Gortat is now a Dallas Maverick, while Jones and Carney are waiting to see who else falls into place.

Over the weekend I read that the Pacers had contacted the agents for Shannon Brown and Luther Head.  The Pacers are definitely looking for wing/perimeter help this Summer.

If they can manage to sign one of the Jones/Carney duo and one of the Head/Brown duo, then I think that would be a solid Summer for the Pacers.  If they would sign both Jones and Carney then that would be a really good free agent period for them.

I guess I will just sit and wait to see what happens!

The Bulls are kind of doing the same thing. I call it 'the anti-Cubs strategy' since they went out and signed Milton Bradley for $10 million/year where if they waited another month they probably could have had him for $6-8 million.

What about Rashad McCants? Any chance of going after him?

I'm not sure if they will go after him, but I've always liked McCants. In the 2005 draft, I really thought McCants would end up with the Pacers. Instead, we ended up with Granger!

I'd really like to see McCants in Indy. He has improved his shooting touch and I think he is the kind of player the Pacers need/want. His numbers don't really reflect his improvements, because he was often limited to run'n'gun time and/or was the main offensive option on the floor, so he forced a lot of shots. He wouldn't have to worry about either of those things with the Pacers, because Jim O'Brien's offense is perimeter oriented and Danny Granger is the go-to guy. McCants would be option C or D in most cases.
