It's fourth down, with two yards to go on my own 28. I'm winning 34 to 28 with just over two minutes to play. My opponent is a little shaky, but has shown the ability to score and score quickly. I decide to go for it...I get the first down and run the clock out. My opponent sends me a message saying "good game, ballsy call." And that is how it plays out when playing Madden 10 online on my PS3.
That isn't how it played out for the New England Patriots last night. I couldn't believe the audacity of Bill Belicheck deciding to go for it. As a fan, I was insulted he would try to go for it right there. I then immediately thought the Patriots were going to get the first down and run the clock out, game over. When Kevin Faulk caught Tom Brady's pass, my heart sank a little as I saw him passed the yellow line, indicating a first down. I was then brought back to life when the official marked the ball and gave his reasoning for the marking. A BOBBLE? Thank you very much Mr. Official! A wave of excitement hit me when I realized the Colts had the ball on the 29 yard line with two minutes to go.
Of course we were going to score, right? After listening to Cris Collinsworth swoon over Tom Brady all night, I had no doubt in my mind that Peyton Manning was going to do whatever it took to get into the endzone. HOLY CRAP - JOSEPH ADDAI UP THE MIDDLE TO THE GOAL LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted to score, but like everyone else, I didn't want Tom Brady to get the ball back with any time on the clock. WTF?!?!?!! AMAZING CATCH BY REGGIE WAYNE IN THE ENDZONE....hurry, send as many OMG, WTF text messages as possible. Did anyone stay up to watch this??? I couldn't believe it, but I could believe it...it was like playing out the best possible "if this happens, then they can just do this" scenario on the field. And no better opponent to watch it happen to than the New England Patriots with all of their smugness. My hatred for the Patriots rivals my hatred for people that chew with their mouth open and the Yankees...basically anything sports related in the New England/Philly/New York area is on that list as well, with a few exceptions.
After watching Randy Moss absolutely own the Colts' secondary, Wes Welker own the middle of the field, Tom Brady disect the Colts' defense whenever he wanted, Colts' receivers drop pass after pass, and then Manning threw that last pick, I was ready to throw in the towel. I only kept watching, because the game was only two scores and anything could happen, though I had my doubts.
How big was Robert Mathis last night? 2 sacks, 1 deflected pass, and 1 forced fumble. He took over late in the game and without him, the Colts don't get the chances to comeback.
I'm still so excited about the outcome that I can't even get everything out of my head right now.
I do know this though. If we have to play them again in the playoffs, we better hope it is in Indianapolis again.
