For those of you that know me, know that I am a big fan of the Indiana Pacers. For those of you that know me well, know that I am a big movie buff. I think it is time to introduce two of my loves to one another. Movies, meet the Pacers. Pacers, I give you Movies. I'm not sure if I've spent more time watching basketball or movies during my 29 years on this planet, but being from Indiana and knowing my grandparents (who I spent quite a bit of time with), I've probably seen as much basketball as most people twice my age.
The past few seasons have been especially hard for me to watch the Pacers as they go through the motions of what they consider "good basketball" and "rebuilding", but I am not a fair-weather fan, so I stay the course and I root for my team, even if it is ran by Dweedle Dee and Dweedle Dum. I keep convincing myself that there is glory at the end of this hopeless situation. People keep saying the good days will come back.
One of my favorite movies from 2009 was "The Road." Viggo Mortensen starred in this movie that I can only describe as deeply depressing. If you haven't heard of the movie or the book it was adapted from, then you really need to read the book or rent the movie when it comes out. The story is basically a man and his son trying to survive during post-apocalyptic times. The father (Mortensen) believes there are better days ahead and his hope, even if tested several times, never disappears. I think the most powerful scene of the movie is when father and son appear to be in grave danger and Viggo's character pulls out a pistol with two bullets and puts it to his son's head. He cannot pull the trigger, even though he knows that if he doesn't, then only bad things will happen to his son. They avoid the danger and father and son hug and cry.
How do these two things tie together? It's quite simple. I am Viggo's character in this situation and my love for the Pacers are his son. I have taken my pistol out many times and tried to kill off my love for the Pacers, but I cannot do it. Even if its .0001%, I know there is a chance at something better than what the team is currently doing. I know things will turn around, but the road is long. So, I'll keep my two bullets in my gun and pray that I never have to use them.
